Exchange 2010 expands the work of the CAS by completing the relocation of client connections from the Store and provides a new MAPI endpoint to which clients can connect before being proxied by the RPC Client Access (RCA) layer to the mailbox database that hosts the target mailbox. This change is a fundamental part of breaking the link between mailbox and server that allows Exchange 2010 to introduce mailbox database mobility between servers. The Autodiscover feature provides the necessary magic to allow Outlook clients to continue to locate their mailboxes after the transition to Exchange 2010. Transferring the MAPI endpoint from mailbox servers to the CAS means that the Exchange 2010 version of the CAS handles more workload than ever before and that the CAS becomes even more essential to the overall health of an Exchange infrastructure. MAPI connections to public folder servers from Outlook are not handled by the CAS and continue to go directly from client to server.

Although relocating MAPI connectivity to the CAS might seem to be simple housekeeping completing the task of bringing all protocol access together it also delivers five real benefits to Exchange. First, all protocols now flow through a common code path. This
